"EXIT SHOW":
"It is a small world after all"
1998 - 2001

"EXIT SHOW:
IT IS A SMALL WORLD AFTER ALL"
1998 - 2001

Since 1989 my artistic work deals mainly with the passages (through doors, windows) which induce a transformation by being the end and the beginning of a space ; what I define as the "inter space". In a 1998 series, I began to work with emergency EXIT signs: the EXIT light boxes add a notion of suddenness to the theme; as an ultimate call to motion which amplifies the process of transformation and its potentiality.

The different installations of the EXIT Show ("Exit Shutters", "Exit Music boxes", "Exit Crosses", "EXIT Ferris Wheel") are representative of reflections about this "inter space". The EXIT space which comes after an end (destruction/ disorder) and before a beginning (reconstruction/ order). This antagonism represents the genesis of a potential transformation.
For example in ''EXIT Shutters" installation, meaning is derived by the EXIT light disappearing as soon as one attempts to reach it. (The light turns off as the viewer opens the shutters).

The "EXIT Music Box" installation represents the past trapped into the exit box, metamorphosed here into a First aid music box.
The "EXIT Crosses" installation demonstrates the capacity of the Exit sign to absorb memories which opposes their consumption by their multiplication.( the Exit sign in this piece has to be counterbalanced by seven memories boxes ).
The "EXIT Ferris Wheel" is set up as a machine which processes transformation .

Through these four installations, the EXIT sign box is denying the past, but the past opposes this obliteration leaving the foundation of an eventual reconstruction.

As a french person living the last 11 years in Chicago of United States after being a specialized nurse for twelve years in a psychiatric hospital in Paris, France, I have often been personally caught within and forced to confront this insider/outsider experience of the INTER SPACE: once in the hospital as an observer, and once in the states as an actor.
